EXCERPTS FROM THE SPEECH BY PRESIDENT LUIZ INÁCIO LULA DA SILVA TO DIPLOMATS ON THE OCCASION OF HIS VISIT TO THE “INSTITUTE RIO BRANCO”, BRAZIL’S DIPLOMATIC TRAINING SCHOOL ON 29TH APRIL, 2008

“. . .In external politics, like in all political activities, as also in everything in the world, it is fact and emotion. A few days ago, I returned from Ghana, on my eighth trip to Africa, to participate in the UNCTAD Conference. There, we discussed important themes for the future of the world, but over there I also enjoyed an emotional visit to the “Brazil House” to pay homage to the community of Tabom, descendants of the returned slaves, who preserved in the land of Africa parts of their Brazilian past. It was a meeting that served to remember the power of the links that unify Brazil to the continent of Africa and which should turn diplomacy into that blend of fact and emotion which I mention above. . .”
